Our TV Holiday Wish List What Do You Wish?
Parks and Recreation 'Tis the season for holiday miracles, so why can't we hope the same for television? Santa, please give Cougar Town a premiere date. Hanukkah Harry, all we ask is that Steve Carell get awards recognition for his Office role. Harvest gods of Kwanzaa, let Castle and Beckett finally get together. And please, Winter Solstice Fairy, stop all the incest on TV! We wish: -For Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake to reprise "The History of Rap" with "The History of Pop." -For old Lily to come back on Modern Family. No one does a deadpan face better than the Hiller twins. -For all but the the last 20 seconds of Dexter's sixth season to be erased from our memory. -For Nicole Scherzinger to be removed as a judge on The X Factor and be replaced by Madonna (we can dream, right?) -For The Office to end. It's time. -For Ryan Murphy to take an interest in Glee again. We love American Horror Story too, but it's pretty obvious one of his TV babies is being neglected. -For Sammi and Ronnie to have a shotgun wedding and quit Jersey Shore for good. -For Parks and Recreation to continue to kill it week after week. Never change, Pawnee! Check out the best TV shows of 2011 -For the cable networks to chill out with all the incest (except for Game of Thrones' twincest, of course) because we don't need that to become mainstream. -For the ghost of Mags Bennett to haunt Justified for seasons to come. Ditto for Gus on Breaking Bad. -For How I Met Your Mother's wardrobe and hair departments to dress and style Cobie Smulders better. Girlfriend is looking tragic. -For everyone to realize that Happy Endings is, in fact, as good as a happy ending. -For The Vampire Diaries' Damon and Elena to finally give in to each other. -For Chris Noth to become a series regular on The Good Wife. -For Boardwalk Empire not to have killed off the drama's most interesting character in the season finale. (Guess this wish can't come true though...) -For Steve Carell to win the SAG for playing Michael Scott since that's his last chance to take home an award for that role. What were the worst TV moments of 2011? -For everyone to recognize - and bow down to - The Real Housewives of Atlanta's new star, and her formidable donkey booty, Phaedra Parks. (Nene, who?) -For everyone to recognize - and bow down to - King Goffrey. Tyrion Shmyrion. It's high time we acknowledge Game of Thrones' real scene stealer... also, he'll behead you otherwise. -For Cougar Town to finally get a premiere date and a full season. -For Howard Stern to make America's Got Talent a watchable show. -For NBC's Smash to be a hit. -For Castle and Beckett to just sleep together already. -For the presidential debates to get even wackier, keeping Real Time, The Colbert Report, The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live well-stocked with material. -For the planned prime-time return of Person to Person to offer a worthy reprise of Edward R. Murrow's program. -For people to watch the challenging and sober drama Awake when NBC finally schedules it so that it isn't insta-canceled. -For Doctor Who's next season to arrive soon! At least set a return date for us Yanks! Who were the breakout stars of 2011? -For Bravo to renew the little-seen Work of Art for a third season, because it is unlike anything else on TV, the judges continue to dazzle, and it's the one reality show we don't feel gross watching. -For Downton Abbey to go the American route when it comes to production and deliver us 22 weekly episodes a year. While we're at it: ditto Sherlock. -For The Bachelor to cast someone new to star. -For the Pretty Little Liars to actually catch A and get vindicated. -For an angel to come forward to finance Ebert Presents: At the Movies, since Roger Ebert and his wife are running out of money. -For 2 Broke Girls to keep its combination of edge and sweetness while showing how a member of the 1 percent and someone from the 99 percent can forge a rock-solid, loving and loyal friendship. Those are our holiday wishes for TV. What are yours?

'Kill Bill 3': Vivica A. Fox Wants a Cameo
Vivica A. Fox wants revenge. While promoting her made-for-TV movie, 'Annie Clause is Coming to Town,' the actress was asked about a potential cameo in 'Kill Bill 3' (yes, there is one degree of separation between a Hallmark movie and a Quentin Tarantino franchise). In the first 'Kill Bill,' Fox played assassin Vernita Green, who is -- SPOILER -- killed by the Bride (Uma Thurman) right in front of her daughter. Although there aren't any official plans regarding a third movie, there have been rumors from Tarantino about a possible sequel, which would be set ten years in the future and feature Green's daughter looking to avenge her mother's death. So, any chance of a Vernita Green flashback? "Quentin Tarantino is such a genius, that I am really hoping it will either be a flashback or something that he can show Vernita Green playing with her daughter [Nikki], teaching her some moves, or passing on some messages that she remembers," Fox told The Hollywood Reporter. "I would definitely tell her to 'Watch out with that cereal box, don't try that move on The Bride, cause she's also good with the knife.' Maybe it'll be a flashback or something like that, but I definitely hope to be a part of it." The cereal box reference has to do with the actual Vernita-Bride fight scene. IMDb currently lists 'Kill Bill 3' with a very tentative 2014 release date. For now, Tarantino will be working on his spaghetti western flick, 'Django Unchained,' starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx, which hits theaters Christmas Day 2012. Martha Stewart Deal With J.C. Penney Annoys Macy's
20th Century Fox Television co-chairman Dana Walden lands at No. 5 on the Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment list this week. In February, she'll celebrate 20 years with the company.our editor recommends'Glee': Chord Overstreet Offers 5 Things to Know About Sam's ReturnTV Ratings: 'Glee' and 'New Girl' Hit Season Lows for Soft Fox Win, Michael Buble Premieres a Modest 'Christmas'20th Century Fox TV Studio Execs Talk Tim Allen's Return to TV, Seth MacFarlane's 'Flintstones' Reboot (Q&A)THR's Women in Entertainment 2011: Power 100 Her accomplishments: Too many to count, but for starters, there's the Emmy Award-winning Modern Family, the No. 3 show of the fall season among adults 18-49 (second only to football and Two and a Half Men); How I Met Your Mother, up 24% in total viewers since this time last year; and Sons of Anarchy, FX's highest-rated series ever. Not to mention 20th TV has five new shows on four networks this year, New Girl, Terra Nova, Last Man Standing, American Horror Story and Homeland, each showing strong strides in viewership. And finally, there's The Simpsons, broadcasting its 500thepisode in February. All told, Walden looks after 34 shows currently in production. PHOTOS:The Scene at THR's 2011 Women In Entertainment Power 100 Breakfast But even with beloved classics like The X Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer under her belt, there's no denying the TV powerhouse that is Glee. Now in its third season on Fox, it remains the No. 1 scripted hour on television among 18- to 34-year-olds, while the worldwide Glee brand, which includes a record-breaking tour, 36 million songs sold on iTunes, 11 top-selling albums and a theatrical concert film, serves as an awe-inspiring example of cross-platform marketing at its finest. That's not to say the show hasn't taken its licks, however, and this year more than ever thanks to casting confusion and an occasional dip in the numbers -- like this week's episode which saw a 9 percent decline. It's backlash the press-savvy Walden, herself a former publicist, can't deny, but she doesn't make any apologies, either. "I don't think anything in the history of the medium could burn as brightly as Glee and not experience some period of time when the show is not the golden child," she tells the Hollywood Reporter. "It will be again. I fully believe in this series. I think that [co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] and his team have done exactly the right thing -- you put your head down, tell great stories and continue to produce an enormously entertaining show." PHOTOS: Behind the Scenes of Fox's 'New Girl' Walden contends that because the criticism is mostly media-based, it doesn't speak to the passion of the audience. "They are connected to these characters," she says. "They read about the actors and the characters online, they collect the DVDs, they buy the merchandise, they are part of a community that connects with each other all centered on one TV show... At some point, it won't feel sexy to take shots at Glee anymore." Furthermore, where the ratings are concerned, Walden insists she and her fellow chairman Gary Newman aren't worried. "When you look at the live plus three and the live plus seven ratings, the show is still doing in excess of a five rating," she says. "Any company would be thrilled to have that show. I am not concerned about the ratings." VIDEO: Gary Numan, Dana Walden at 'Glee' 3D Premiere Still, working with creatives like Murphy does come with challenges, and in a way, it's what Walden lives for. "There's a whole emotional component to working with creative individuals which is unlike most businesses," she says. "I am not interested in working with a writer who wants to take every one of my notes. I'm looking for someone who will be thoughtful about my input and respect that we are partners, [but] I also want our creators to be emotional, passionate people because those are the people who tell the best stories. Ryan and I have an incredible relationship. We have a tremendous amount of trust for each other. I trust his instincts as much as anyone I have ever worked with. He has this incredible sense of what's in the zeitgeist." STORY:Anne Sweeney Tops THR's 2011 Women in Entertainment Power 100 List What is difficult about working with Murphy? "Saying no to him," Walden laughs. "He always gets the benefit of the doubt with me. Of the ideas he and I discuss, probably 90% of them I would pursue in some way. He's such a hard worker and so clear about his vision -- that's exactly what you want from a creator. And when he's set on something, he believes in it completely. Again, it's how I prefer it. I would rather work with someone like Ryan than someone who is purely pragmatic." It's a formula that's led to Walden's proudest -- and busiest -- year yet. "I cannot imagine a time in the company's history where we were experiencing success on as many different platforms as we are right now," she says. "But I've been very happy in my job. I've worked at this company for a long time and it's been a tremendous experience. Certainly this has been an incredible year for me personally." About That Time Hedy Lamarr Invented WWII-Era Bluetooth Technology
“Hedy didn’t drink. She didn’t like to party. Her idea of a good evening was a quiet dinner party with some intelligent friends where they could discuss ideas — which sounds so un-Hollywood, but Hedy had to find something else to do to occupy her time.” In his new book Hedy’s Folly, author Richard Rhodes sheds light on the little-known side hobby of Hedy Lamarr, Austrian-American actress, Golden Age screen siren, and… inventor. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Rhodes, who talked up his book yesterday on NPR, connects the dots between Lamarr’s sizable downtime as a contracted studio star with only a handful of work commitments per year, her frequent access to dinner table chatter with luminaries and politicians alike, her desire to battle the Nazis as the daughter of Austrian Jews, and her natural gift for ideas. As a result, Lamarr wasn’t just “the most beautiful woman in Europe;” she was a patent-holder who, along with avante-gard composer George Antheil, came up with the idea of frequency-hopping radio signals that could guide Allied torpedoes to their targets, avoiding enemy radio jammers. From NPR: “She understood that the problem with radio signals was that they could be jammed. But if you could make the signal hop around more or less randomly from radio frequency to radio frequency, then the person at the other end trying to jam the signal won’t know where it is,” [Rhodes] says. “If they try to jam one particular frequency, it might hit that frequency on one of its hops, but it would only be there for a fraction of a second.”Thus, her take on “spread-spectrum radio” was born. Lamarr and her co-inventor, composer George Antheil, submitted their idea to the National Inventor’s Council and received a patent for their “Secret Communication System” in 1942. They were anxious to share their invention with the Navy, but got a lackluster response.“The Navy being the Navy, if it hadn’t been able to make a torpedo that worked, obviously it wasn’t going to be receptive to ideas coming in from outside,” Rhodes says. “The Navy basically threw it into the file.” The technology was later developed into the spread spectrum broadcasting and frequency-hopping techniques that make modern tech like Bluetooth and GPS possible. In 2007, Lamarr received a special award for her contribution from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “When they called her up to tell her she would get the award,” says Rhodes, “her first words were, Hedy Lamarr being Hedy Lamarr, ‘Well, it’s about time.’” Just imagine what technologies of tomorrow today’s celebrities could be dreaming up in their downtime… Read more over at NPR and in Slate’s book review of Hedy’s Folly. Capture suits Serkis okay
Serkis in the capture suit playing ape leader Caesar round the number of 'Rise in the Planet in the Apes'Serkis as Kong in 'King Kong'Andy Serkis as Gollum in 'Lord in the Rings'Andy Serkis on number of 'The Adventures of Tintin'Andy Serkis has labored in performance capture becoming it elevated from an obscure technical process to have an recognized form. We spoke to him on his history with performance capture and the way it's changed from an actor's perspective. How perhaps you have get started with performance capture?I used to be greatly an ordinary actor working feature film and tv. I obtained a telephone call in the agent saying, "They're doing 'Lord in the Rings' reduced Nz, they require you to accomplish this voice for just about any digital character. It will likely be about two weeks' work." Which I mentioned, "Now look guy, there needs to be twelve decent roles because movie. Is it possible to not produce up for something proper?" In those days, really Gollum wasn't apt to be created using performance capture because performance capture didn't exist. It absolutely was referred to in my opinion just like a key frame animated creature that we could be lending a voice to. However, basically met Healing For Healing For Peter Jackson, it absolutely was apparent he required it beyond that. How perhaps you have experience that in those days?I have to convey it absolutely was a substantial frightening proposition. I began to type of straddle our world beyond my understanding, beyond the acting world and being connected with others an entirely different way around the film set. You are familiar with, becoming an actor, either nailing a scene in those days or this really is this is not on your entire day. I desired to start learning the process, it might be an alternative way of working, which I'd have to re-build associations the moments afterwards, that's what went lower because I quickly came back and labored in a really rudimentary motion capture volume. I'll remember the first time of putting on a suit and markers, which i'd literally only move 3 foot of square. Putting on these goggles which, using the personal computers, allowed me to find out through Gollum's eyes. It absolutely was just an amazing kind of epiphany, really, which i felt wow, it features a lot potential, and immediately fell deeply deeply in love with it.Does performance capture have a very large learning curve for stars?Because the technologies allow us a great deal, it's become really the transparent process. Previously, with "Master in the Rings" I'd go and employ artists on every person shot afterwards, which i had been around to continue referencing together. In individuals days, i was not using facial capture, and so the facial expressions weren't driven from a few things i was doing. My performance was shot on 35 mm so the artists would copy frame by frame, they managed to get happen literally alongside. That changed throughout "King Kong" once we started to take advantage of facial capture. I suppose this is actually the transition from motion capture into performance capture in the perspective. How come you're feeling you've become so good at performance capture and therefore recognized from it?I've loved an incredibly wealthy relationship with Weta. Weta are, in my opinion, our planet's leaders in transforming actors' performance using performance capture technology, because it evolves from the host to trying to inform an account and wanting in truth with a character's journey and becoming fidelity for the actor's performance at that time while using director. And That I have labored with virtually the identical motion capture team, including on "Rise in the Planet in the Apes," returning 12 years, so I've had an incredible relationship using these males. In my opinion they probably know the muscle structure of my face greater than anybody in the world, to ensure that they are fully aware exactly how to interpret the emotions, ideas, feelings in the character that i'm playing.I'm looking at shoulders of leaders because sense. I'm I'm the motive pressure from the Formula 1 racing vehicle.FEST TRAVELER: WHISTLER FILM FESTIVAL Hollywood altitude Most warm welcomes Laurels relaxation here Capture suits Serkis okay Contact David S. Freedom fuels Arab oasis
'On the Edge'A new generation of filmmakers emerge with pics like Narjiss Nejjar's 'The Rif Lover.'In the wake of the Arab Spring, the spotlight is turning to Arab films. Morocco is well placed to shine: It stands at the forefront of democratic reforms and has one of the region's strongest national film support systems."We're seeing something quite new in Moroccan cinema," says Faical Laraichi, head of pubcaster SNRT, which has played a key role in nurturing local talent. "Until a few years ago the dominant style was social realism, but now we're seeing tremendous diversity, including avant-garde styles, comedies, action-adventure, many new directors and new genres.""Industries such as Bollywood revolve around formula pics," says Noureddine Sail, head of the Moroccan Cinema Center. "In Morocco, we have a very eclectic, creative approach."Sail cites the six films playing Marrakech, which include film noir, baroque excess, Italian-style comedy and neo-realism.Riding this energy wave, Moroccan films have increased their presence at Cannes, Toronto and Abu Dhabi over the past 12 months. The French-Morocco axis is also building as Paris-based co-producers and sales agents channel funds and production expertise to Moroccan films and cherry-pick young helmers."This is an exciting period for Moroccan cinema," says director Leila Kilani. "You can feel the sense of expectation at big festivals. There's a new generation of Moroccan filmmakers coming onto the scene."Kilani's debut feature, "On the Edge," about four girls from Tangiers who peel shrimps by day and turn tricks by night, is a perfect example. Kilani produced her 1.2 million ($1.64 million) pic through her Moroccan shingle, Socco Chico, with France's Aurora Films. Fortissimo handles international sales. Following the pic's Cannes world premiere, and after kudos from San Sebastian, Abu Dhabi and Taormina, Kilani describes her Moroccan premiere at Marrakech as the "most exciting and yet scariest" of her screenings to date.Morocco boasts an increasing number of successful local producers. Producer-director Nabil Ayouch has one of the strongest track records, including an impressive series of 42 TV movies, produced for SNRT. He is filming the $4.8 million "The Stars of Sidi Moumen," about the teenage suicide bombers involved in the 2003 Casablanca bombing, co-produced by Pierre-Ange Le Pogam's Stone Angel.Upcoming young producers include Lamia Chraibi, named one of Variety Arabia's Five Arab Producers to Watch at October's Abu Dhabi Festival.Chraibi's recent credits include Marrakech's opener, Narjiss Nejjar's "The Rif Lover," about a 20-year-old woman jailed for being a drug baron's lover; Mohamed Achour's quirky comedy about filmmaking, "The Film"; and Hicham Lasri's moody B&W sophomore pic, "The End," set against the birth of a liberal era under King Mohammed VI. Latter is sold by Insomnia World Sales. One of Morocco's main challenges is lack of screens. They have halved since 2004, causing total national admissions to drop from 6.8 million to 2.5 million in this period. At present 63% of the country's box office is generated by only two multiplexes -- in Casablanca and Marrakech -- both owned by Megarama. The French chain has inked deals with the CCM to build five multiplexes over the next two years -- a 10-screener in Rabat, 12-screener in Agadir, 10- and eight-screeners in Tangiers and a five-screener in Fez.Within five years, all Moroccan screens will be digital; ticketing systems will be computerized and centralized by January.U.S. movies take a 52% market share, performing particularly well in the multiplexes. Moroccan films also command a loyal following, with around a 20% share every year. The most popular local titles over the past 12 months -- both expected to generate over 100,000 admissions by December -- have been Mohamed Karrat's musical comedy "Nhar tzad tfa dow" ("When I Was Born There Was a Power Cut"), starring local beau Rachid El Ouali, and Abdelhai Laraki's romantic tale "Love in the Medina" starring young heartthrob Omar Lotfi. But there has been no local blockbuster in 2011.Helmer Noureddine Lakhmari, who directed the hit "Casanegra" in 2009, with 240,000 admissions, is hoping to generate an equally strong reaction with his upcoming "Zero" about an antihero seeking redemption, that he hopes to have ready in January."We need an event film every three months," says Lakhmari. "I have great hope for the future. Culture stands at the heart of change in Morocco."Filmmakers welcome the reforms passed in Morocco in 2011, but helmers such as Lakhmari and Ayouch nonetheless express concern about the outcome of the Nov. 25 parliamentary elections, in which they fear conservative forces may gain leverage."It's like being on a train," Ayouch says. "We don't know where it will stop or ultimately where it's going."Young helmer Adil el Fadili ("A Short Life") is nonetheless upbeat. "It's too late for extremism. We've tasted freedom and there's no going back," he says.Sail concurs, "I find it difficult to take seriously a country that doesn't have a vibrant national film industry, because it shows it has a problem with freedom of expression, which ultimately means it has a problem with freedom itself."FEST TRAVELER: MARRAKECH FILM FESTIVALSalute to Mexican cinema | Freedom fuels Arab oasis | Homegrown tales power Moroccan tube | Arab Spring signals return of foreign films Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

And that is even presuming anybody may wish to invest given the likelihood of a clash with Effie. Still, regardless of the seeming disparity of her playing a teen, Knightley's title should draw some attention.
HBO topper's career guided by military service
NelsonBill Nelson, chairman and CEO of HBO, is a Vietnam combat veteran who served with the 2/502nd Infantry of the 101st Airborne Division.Serving in uniform is a life-changing experience.Training for it, preparing for it and experiencing it changes your perspective on many things. The paramount issue, I believe, is that it seals a bond with those around you. It seals in the notion of togetherness, teamwork and selflessness. It's a somewhat dramatic transition from "me" to "we," and the military is the best educational institution to teach that. It is a permanent and positive enhancement to one's character.I believe that an enterprise can only reach its greatest potential with a team mentality. So at HBO, I've spent my 27 years trying to contribute to that concept, and the whole executive team and staff, right through to the entry level, has embraced that culture. It is a culture of collective spirit, collective wisdom, collective instinct and strategy. I believe that the insight, ability and determination to execute on that, for me, are reflections of my time in the military.I would like to note that the unemployment rate for our returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan is running at around 30%, or about triple the national average. I believe that every company should focus on hiring veterans because it's the right thing to do, and because it is a good business decision. When you hire a veteran, you are employing someone who is trained, motivated, loyal, has leadership skills, understands organizational structure, works well under pressure and fits well into a team environment.Veterans are team players. They have been trained to be. Veterans naturally bring a positive, team-oriented influence to any operating group of talented people. So, hiring veterans is not only a moral and patriotic obligation, it is a smart business decision as well. Contact Variety Staff at news@variety.com

Update: The Dark Knight Rises Will Not Film at Occupy Wall Street
Maybe filming background scenes at Zuccotti Park wasn’t a great idea after all, or perhaps it was never really going to happen, but still: EW reports that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which shoots this month in NY City, will not be using the Occupy Wall Street movement as a backdrop for one-percenter hero Bruce Wayne’s latest shenanigans, despite speculations to the contrary. Probably a good idea, especially after the Occupy movement turned Oakland, CA into something resembling a war zone last night, tear gas and all. [EW]

Dancing With the Stars: Ricki Lake's Secret Fear
Derek Hough, Ricki Lake Carson Kressley is gone, leaving Ricki Lake one step closer to the Mirror Ball trophy. You'd think the woman would be fearless. You'd be wrong. Lake, 43, who had a highly successful syndicated talk show for 11 years - and did a documentary about giving birth at home to one of her two children - couldn't even enjoy making it through to next week's show on Dancing With the Stars, Broadway Week, because the next dance, the Quick Step, terrifies her. Why? She tries to explain, delicately. "Because when you're a mother and you've given birth and you jump up and down, what tends to happen?" she asks. "You tinkle a little bit sometimes. I can't go on a trampoline, for example. So I'm a little concerned. For the record, it hasn't happened yet." Aren't there products made for that? "Yes, but I don't want to wear those products!" she says, horrified. "Don't worry, you can 'depend' on me," quips her pro partner, Derek Hough, 26. Hough tries to reassure Lake by giving her something else to worry about: Him. "When we were doing the tango last week, I was super tough on her," says Hough. "And this week, doing the fox trot, we sort of just went through it. So today I said to her, 'You got Tango Derek back next week, because that one gets results.'" "I did better when he was mean to me," admits Lake, now taking a back seat in the standings to actor and Iraqi war veteran J.R. Martinez, who ignited the ballroom with his blistering samba and shot to the top of the leader board. When she entered the competition, Lake was talking trash about winning the whole thing. Now that reality has set in, and she's battling not only the charismatic Martinez but a pair of very sore knees, it's just about making it to the next round. "I haven't had a life," she says. "Everything has been put on the back burner because of Dancing With the Stars.'" Is she a quitter? No way, no matter how many times she says in the rehearsal studios that she can't do something. She seems to hit a wall every week. But despite her fears, this is one tough cookie. She's going to tackle the Quick Step, one foot at a time. "I had my baby at home in the bathtub," she says. "So if I can do that, I can pretty much do anything." Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine today!

Matt's Guide to Thursday TV: A Classic Community and All that Jazz
Danny Pudi There's no comedy series quite like Community, and as is often the case with such an uncompromised original, being this defiantly different comes with a price. And sadly, that price tends to be the sort of cellar-dwelling ratings that would get most shows canceled, if on any other network. Thankfully, NBC can ill afford these days to turn away any show that gets this kind of cult and media buzz, although everyone wishes it were doing better or were programmed in a time period (the old 30 Rock slot currently being wasted on Whitney, maybe?) that might increase its exposure. Such things are out of our control. All we can do is keep beating the drums in a frenzy of admiration when episodes as wildly, weirdly entertaining as tonight's "Remedial Chaos Theory" (8/7c) come along. It's the sort of riotous experiment that will reward replaying, to enjoy and study from every conceivable angle. Because there are many at play here, which is the existential point. The setting is Troy and Abed's new apartment "of perpetual virginity" (Jeff's snarky first reaction), where the study group has gathered for a classic "bottle episode" of a housewarming party. As they settle down for a game of Yahtzee ("Is charades off the table?" Jeff sighs), a roll of the dice to determine who goes to fetch a pizza delivery sets up (in Abed's mind) six different timelines. And what happens next, as we see each scenario unfold, reveals the effect on the group when a single member leaves the room. Variations on character-specific running gags ensue, building to a hilariously calamitous meltdown and a smart final twist that sets everything right again. I loved this episode, and expect all those who love Community will as well, while those who don't will continue to scratch their noggins as they wonder what all the fuss is about. In the Parks and Recreation episode that follows (8:30/7:30c), Leslie attempts to upstage Ron Swanson's boys-only fun-deprived wilderness group by taking her own distaff club, the Pawnee Goddesses, on an adjacent outing. But when she discovers she may have succeeded too well - "I've created a mob of little Leslie Knope monsters," she realizes with a mix of horror and pride - something must be done. The funniest subplot this week belongs to the show's most serious character, Ben, reminding us how much better Parks got when Adam Scott (Ben) and Rob Lowe (Chris) joined the ensemble. When Tom and Donna drag a reluctant Ben along for a day of self-indulgence, his attempts to relax only make him more agitated and comically stressed. Even harps make him nervous. Something tells me he wouldn't make a very good Pawnee Ranger. Want more fall TV news? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! A musical legend celebrates a milestone when PBS' Live From Lincoln Center (8/7c, check local schedules) presents Wynton Marsalis at 50, a jazz celebration honoring the musician-composer by revisiting his favorite compositions with guests including vocalist Gregory Porter, pianist Marcus Roberts and violinist Mark O'Connor. The live performance, including a second hour not televised, will be streamed online at pbs.org. We're still a few weeks away from November sweeps, but the stunt casting is already well underway. Among tonight's notable guest stars: Wil Wheaton returns to CBS' The Big Bang Theory (8/7c) as Sheldon's nemesis, this time joined by fellow Star Trek: The Next Generation alum Brent Spiner, as Sheldon and Leonard are invited to a party at Wheaton's house. ... Debbie Allen scrubs in at ABC's Grey's Anatomy (9/8c) as Jackson Avery's famous surgeon mother Catherine, on hand to perform a rare transplant surgery. ... On NBC's The Office (9/8c), Andy's family is introduced when he nervously hosts a garden party in hopes of impressing his inscrutable new boss. Stephen Collins and Dee Wallace are his mom and dad, and singer Josh Groban tests his comedy chops as the Nard Dog's brother. So what else is on? ... No one would accuse ABC's struggling Charlie's Angels reboot of excessive originality, but this week (8/7c), they're actually borrowing a script from the original series. It's "Angels in Chains" time, as the gals contrive to land themselves in a Cuban prison to crack a kidnapping ring. Smallville's Erica Durance guests as a former flame of Bosley's from the CIA. ... It's Senior Prank Night on the CW's The Vampire Diaries (8/7c), and while Elena and the gang attempt to enjoy themselves before starting senior year (yeah, right), naturally - or, rather, supernaturally - some uninvited guests show up to stir up some danger. Because otherwise there wouldn't be a show. Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Eugene Onegin
An L.A. Opera presentation of the opera in three functions by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Konstantin S. Shilovsky. Original production directed by Steven Pimlott. Director, Francesca Gilpin conductor, James Conlon sets and costumes, Anthony McDonald lighting, Peter Mumford original choreographer, Linda Dobell choreographer, Ulrika Hallberg. Opened up and examined Sept. 17, 2011. Running time: 3 Hrs.Tatiana Larina - Oksana Dyka
Vladimir Lensky - Vsevolod Grivnov
Eugene Onegin - Dalibor Jenis
Prince Gremin - James Creswell Wagner shipped unequalled romantic fulfillment, however when it found indicating romantic yearning, Tchaikovsky was unparalleled -- as evidenced with "Eugene Onegin." It's difficult to think that L.A. Opera, now honoring its 25th anniversary, is staging its first "Onegin." Tchaikovsky could be pleased. The development, lent in the Finnish National Opera and Covent Garden's Royal Opera House, delights the attention, even when it's a little picky. Even better, the performers delight the ear, even when they're a little blunt within their approach. The main enthusiasts, Tatiana (Oksana Dyka) and Onegin (Dalibor Jenis), don't die within this opera, and much more amazing, they never even hug, although director Francesca Gilpin has them fuss a little in the finish in her own staging. The issue continues to be that after she would be a teen Tatiana authored an appreciation letter towards the older Onegin, and that he did not go perfectly, rejecting her with many different discuss not the getting married to kind. Worse, and merely because he's bored and Byronic, he flirts together with her sister (Ekaterina Semenchuk), who's engaged to his close friend Lensky (Vsevolod Grivnov), which, since it is a Russian opera, leads to Onegin killing Lensky inside a duel. Years later, when she's married a prince (bass-to-watch James Creswell) and Onegin has virtually wasted his existence, he realizes his mistake and claims his passion to Tatiana. She's still deeply in love with him, but in the end, she's married to royalty now and knows to remain put. This letter-writing factor may appear dated, but the number of Real Average women of Whatever have sent impulsive emails, texts or twitters that they have arrived at regret, spinning out an entire season's price of episodes on Bravo? But to the 1800s. Anthony McDonald has produced an attractive box-within-a-box set that enables for stunning land- and cloud-scapes to become forecasted around the cyclorama before a pastoral pond, which becomes a Saint Petersburg skating rink for that third act. Tchaikovsky provided no less than five stunning dances in "Eugene Onegin," as well as for individuals acquainted with the opera, it'll come like a shock to locate that Prince Gremin has had towards the cold outdoors instead of entertain his visitors in your own home in the ballroom. Rather than a great promenade, we obtain ice-skating filled with torches around the snow -- an incredible stage picture. Tatiana's nightmare at the outset of act two, featuring Onegin and a lot of large creatures, is a smaller amount effective. L.A. Opera has cast its "Eugene Onegin" trio using the real factor: Eastern European performers who possess world-class voices. Dyka and Grivnov are a little more stentorian within their approach than the others lyric roles are designed for, however they deliver stunning vocalism otherwise much nuance. Jenis may be more elegant, but he will get beneath the music to drag out a complete-blooded, otherwise supportive, portrait of the seducer-cad.With: Ekaterina Semenchuk, Margaret Thompson, Ronnita Nicole Burns, Todd Strange, Erik Anstine, Keith Jameson, Philip Cokorinos. Apple drops TV rentals from iTunes
Apple quietly removed the rental option on TV episodes from iTunes on Friday. Series will now only be available to purchase, a decision that may no doubt please the studios given the higher profit margins that come with that kind of transaction. In October 2010, Apple instituted 99-cent rentals on shows from Fox and ABC including "24" and "Desperate Housewives" in tandem with the deployment of Apple TV. "iTunes customers have shown they overwhelmingly prefer buying TV shows," said an Apple spokesman. A Fox spokesman released the following statement: "After carefully considering the results of the rental trial, it became clear that content ownership is a more attractive long-term value proposition both for iTunes customers and for our business. To further enhance the value of ownership, we are working with Apple to make content available within their new cloud-based service." The iTunes rental option is still in place on movies. Kate Beckinsale and director Mns Mrlind talk Underworld: Awakening
Kate Beckinsale may be back in the familiar tight-fitting clothing of her vampire character Selene, but there is one change she's had to adapt to on Underworld: Awakening: two directors."When I first met with them I thought, 'I wonder how that is going to work.' But they have a real system where one of them directs on a Monday and then the other one directs on Tuesday," Beckinsale explained, describing it as, "really cool."Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein first met each other as young children and made their first movie together (Wednesday The 11th) when they we were fifteen."We started working professionally together 10 years ago because we got the same script on the same day. We saw it like, 'This is a sign, you know? We should do this together.'" Mårlind told Shock Till You Drop."The thing was that we knew that other directors are focused: one guy would focus on camera, the other on performances. We realised that we both like the same thing. So, we said, 'Let's do it every second day,'" Mårlind continues."When Björn directs, I'm just his best buddy, which means that I'm helping him and sometimes I can tell him, 'you've got it, move on' or 'maybe you should punch in here and get a closer thing.' I'm prepared to talk to producers or the production designer, while he's taking care of the fire of the day and the next day, we change. Then I'm directing and he's my best buddy.""The one that is not directing is kind of silent and doesn't say anything. I thought they would never be able to keep that up, it must be really difficult but they really do," says Beckinsale. "The advantage is that you get somebody who may have possibly been incredibly frustrated the day before and is so desperate to have his turn that they are full of enthusiasm.""It's funny because when fellow directors hear about this they go, 'Goddamn, that sounds great!' But you need to have someone who you've known since you were kids because it's about taste and trust," Mårlind adds.

Tony Scott Ready to Join 'Wild Bunch'
Oh those Scott boys. It was just Thursday afternoon that Moviefone reported that Ridley Scott was talking to Warner Bros. about making another 'Blade Runner' -- a report verified by a press release from Alcon Entertainment, which has a financing deal with the studio (The filmmakers have not yet revealed whether the project will be a prequel or sequel to the original). Now comes word that brother Tony Scott is in early talks to direct a reboot of Sam Peckinpah's 1969 classic Western 'The Wild Bunch.' The film -- which was set in Texas and Mexico in 1913 -- was controversial for its extreme, slow-motion violence and amoral attitude as it followed four grizzled outlaws -- sensing that they were dinosaurs in a dying Old West -- hoping to make one last score. William Holden, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine, Ben Johnson and Warren Oates starred. For its time, it was the bloodiest film to ever hit the big screen (If you haven't see 'The Wild Bunch,' you need to run out right now and buy or rent it). Before he jumps on 'The Wild Bunch,' Scott will take on the 'Hells Angels,' a thriller about the rivalry between the Angels and another motorcycle gang, The Mongols. That won't start until next year, however, and only if Scott gets his choice of actors to play the Angels' notorious leader Sonny Barger -- and Scott wants Jeff Bridges. By the way, speaking of redos: Scott has been eyeing sequels to his 'Top Gun' and 'The Hunger,' as well as a redo of '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.' And Screen Gems is getting ready to release a redo of another of Peckinpah's controversial films, 'Straw Dogs,' on Sept. 16. Tip o' the hat to Variety, Deadline.
